The next few weeks are the best time to seed or overseed.
Seedlings germinate quickly at this time of year due to (a):
-Residual summer soil warmth
-Moderate day temperatures
-Cool evening temperatures
-Consistent moisture (i.e. an increase in rainfall)
-Less active period for disease and weeds
Seeding now will encourage a strong, deep root system before the winter. This will promote strong spring growth to fend off weeds and summer stress more effectively!!

Sod is highly perishable, especially during the hot summer months. Heat can build up within a roll quickly and cause damage to the turf. The most successful sod installations are done right after delivery. It is important to irrigate deeply, until it’s soggy to walk on, within 15-30 minutes of installing a roll of sod.
Sod not rooting– Most sod varieties will begin to root within 10-14 days. Check watering schedule and adjust to deeper, less frequent …

The topsoil to be screened is loaded in the middle.
The large particles are collected in the large tube on the left.
The finely screened topsoil drops onto a conveyor belt on the

As we move into warmer weather and the snow and ice begins to melt away, we start to see our lawn peeking out at us once again. Sometimes the grass looks healthy and green, and other times, well…not so much.
Understanding the best ways to wake up your lawn from our long, and particularly severe winter, is important to ensure that you have a healthy, strong, green lawn that you …
Thanksgiving has been officially celebrated as an annual holiday in Canada since November 6, 1879.
How Canadian Thanksgiving Began… The origins of Canadian Thanksgiving are more closely connected to the traditions of Europe than of the United States. Long before Europeans settled in North America, festivals of thanks and celebrations of harvest took place in Europe in the month of October. The very first Thanksgiving celebration in North America took place in 1578 in Canada when Martin Frobisher, an …

It’s been a few years since one reared it’s ugly head, but from what forecasters are seeing in and above the Pacific Ocean, there’s a good chance El Nino will be back for this coming winter.

Natural grasses slow the flow of water which minimizes soil loss and captures silt from the water.
Run off of water and pollutants are greatly reduced by a highly maintained lawn.
Dense turf grass cleans/filters the water helping to maintain a high quality environment.
A healthy lawn prevents run-off, absorbing rainfall 6 times more effectively than a wheat field and 4 times better than a hay field.
The cooling properties of natural turf are so effective that temperatures on a sunny summer day will be 10-14 degrees cooler than concrete or asphalt and up to 50 DEGREES COOLER THAN ARTIFICIAL GRASS!
Excessive sound, a growing problem in urban areas is reduced to approx. 8-10 decibels on grassed slopes beside highways.
Lawn areas also scatter light and radiation, greatly reducing glare.
Turf grass purifies water as it filters through the root zone and down into our underground …
WHEN ARE THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER?
According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the Dog Days of summer are traditionally the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11, which coincide with the dawn rising of the Sirius, the Dog Star and its position in the heavens.
Old-timers believed that rainfall on the dog days was a bad omen, as foretold in this verse:
Dog Days bright and clear
Indicate a happy year;
But when accompanied by rain,
Grass traps millions of tons of dust, smoke and dirt released annually into the atmosphere helping to keep the air cleaner.
Just one acre of grass can absorb hundreds of pounds of fossil-fuel created sulfur dioxide in a single year.
A turf area 50′ X 50′ produces enough oxygen to meet the everyday needs of a family of 4.
Each acre of grass produces enough oxygen for 64 people a day.
Natural grass surfaces reduce temperature extremes by absorbing the sun’s heat during the day and releasing it slowly in the evening, thus moderating temperature!
Natural grasses cool temperatures appreciably, thus working as exterior ‘air conditioners’!
Turf cools itself and it’s surroundings by the evapo-transpiration process. Each grass blade acts as an evaporative cooler.
Consider the fact that on a block of 8 average homes, the lawns have the cooling effect of 70 tons of air conditioning!
Have a Wonderful LONG WEEKEND!
The sunflower’s name comes from its tendency to re position itself to face the sun. It’s genus, Helianthus, is rooted in two Greek words — “helios” meaning sun and “anthos” meaning flower.
The sunflower’s yellow color symbolizes vitality, intelligence, and happiness. The color yellow also traditionally symbolizes friendship.
