Lawn Care 101: Watering & Fertilizing Your New Sod
Essential tips to keep your lawn healthy and thriving from day one.
Installing fresh sod is an exciting first step, but to ensure it establishes properly, it needs a little extra attention. Water and fertilizer play a vital role in helping new sod take root and grow strong.
Watering Your New Sod
Newly installed sod is under stress. During harvest, the sod is cut, rolled, transported and unrolled, which removes some of the roots making it vulnerable to drying out. Immediate watering is critical to reduce heat stress and kickstart the rooting process.
Here’s what we recommend:
- Water each section of sod within 15 minutes of installation. Don’t wait until the whole yard is finished.
- For the first watering, be sure to soak the area until water puddles, allow it to soak in, and repeat twice more.
- Hand watering is best at first, followed by sprinklers for ongoing maintenance.
- Check the sod and soil daily. If either feels dry, water again.
- Continue this pattern until the sod has rooted.
Once roots are established, you can adjust your watering schedule. Water less frequently but more deeply to encourage downward root growth. Deep roots are key to surviving hot summer conditions.
Tip: Spring and fall are seasons of active growth — ideal times to build a strong foundation. Summer is more about survival, while spring and fall are about repair and recovery to prepare the grass for spring green up and winter dormancy respectively.
Fertilizing New Sod
Your new sod arrives with some built-in nutrients, but supplementing with fertilizer helps ensure long-term success. There are two common approaches to fertilizing:
Option A: Before Installation
Apply a starter fertilizer (18-32-16) directly to the soil before laying the sod. This places the nutrients right where new roots will grow. Once watered, the fertilizer dissolves and becomes available to the plant.
Option B: After Installation
Apply the starter fertilizer on top of the sod one to two weeks after installation. Since the sod contains some nutrients, waiting gives the roots time to begin growing before adding more. Be sure to water thoroughly to prevent burning and help nutrients reach the soil layer.
Ongoing Fertilizer Schedule
After your initial application, keep your lawn nourished with a regular fertilizing routine:
- Spring: Balanced fertilizer (25-5-10) every 4-6 weeks
- Summer: Every 6-8 weeks
- Fall: Switch to a winterizing fertilizer (20-5-20) every 4-6 weeks
