5 Tips for a Great Lawn from Zander Sod

Zander Sod’s Top Tips for Establishing a Lush Lawn as the Weather Warms

As the snow melts, how do we set up our lawn for Spring success? Here are some tips:

Rake the Grass & Over-seed Bare Patches

Thoroughly collect and remove any debris, senescing leaves or organic matter.

Any debris on the grass can inhibit sunlight and growth, so keeping it clean helps.

Fill in bare patches or thin grass areas using soil and seed. One of the most important factors is ensuring good seed-soil contact. The seeds need this to grow well. It will also protect the seeds during any temperature and weather fluctuations and from potential birds eating the seeds.  Click here for our Overseeding brochure>>

Spread Fertilizer

Use Spring Fertilizer

Use one that releases slowly to feed the grass. As the seeds don’t have any roots to search for water or nutrients in the soil, this provides them food right at the level that they need. Our Spring/Summer Fertilizer (25-5-10) is the best option to encourage spring growth for established grass.

Keep the seed bed wet, irrigating as needed when dry and sunny. When the soil dries out, the seeds have no way to stay hydrated and they dry up and die. This ensures they are happy and continue to grow. Be aware that too much water is harmful as well as the seeds can drown.

Irrigate Frequently & Mow Off Top Growth

Irrigate properly and mow off top growth

Once the weather warms up a bit and the grass begins to grow, mow at a high height to just take off the tops to get rid of any dead or diseased areas. If the grass is a bit unsightly coming out of the winter, getting it mowed off will allow the green color to return and encourage it to grow.
